Best Boat Noodles in Bangkok
This got to be the best Boat Noodles in Bangkok! (Digress: I didn’t tried a lot of boat noodles, but this is my personal fave.)
Boat noodles got its name because it was originally sold by boat vendors on canals and moats, back in the time when Ayutthaya was a prosperous trading capital. Boat noodles were historically served in a small bowl for convenience and safety; the small size made it manageable and prevent spill-over as the vendor had to prepare, cook, wash, etc. while paddle and sell through the choppy waters.
Although boat noodles are now sold on land but the small servings still remains; each of us had to order 2 bowls to feel satisfied. There are only 2 versions: pork and beef, we managed to tried both flavours due to the small serving size.
The broth were pretty similar for both pork and beef. The broth was thick, rich, and mildly spicy, it had an intense flavour of herbs which was very appealing to us. The only difference was the beef broth had more aroma to it, the typical beef flavour you tasted from well-seasoned beef soup/stew.
Kuay Teow Reua Moo (Pork) was served with vegetables, fish balls, and pork slices which was cooked just nice. I supposed we might have arrived late, as there should be pig liver as well.
Kuay Teow Reua Neu-a (Beef) was served with vegetables, fish balls, and beef slices which was nicely cooked and tender too. The only differences we noted was that there were lesser fish balls for Kuay Teow Reua Neu-a, probably to balance out the cost.
There were bean sprouts, fried wonton skins, and pork rinds (fried pork skins) available on the tables, that you can add to the boat noodles.
We found Doy Kuay Teow Reua Boat Noodle online, despite its rave reviews, we didn’t had high anticipation since the previously highly raved food failed us. Rung Rueong Pork Noodle and Thipsamai Pad Thai disappointed us greatly ☹. Thankfully, Doy Kuay Teow Reua Boat Noodle restored our faith.
This unassuming stall have lots to offer, it is an authentic place to satisfy your craving for good Thai delicacy and appreciating the history of boat noodles. The 10mins walk from Victory Monument BTS was absolutely worthwhile!
We paid THB 104 in total, not certain on the cost of individual items:
P.S. Just so you know, pig’s blood or cow’s blood is used as a flavour enhancer for the broth, which explains the dark-coloured broth.
