Australia Dairy Company (and prices)
Australia Dairy Company doesn’t need much introduction; it had gained popularity despite its renowned rude services.
I was first introduced to this cha chaan teng back in 2009; since then, I’ll make an effort to visit Australia Dairy Company whenever I visit Hong Kong. My order will always be Scrambled Eggs (炒蛋), French Toast (西多士), and Cold/Hot Honey Lemon (凍/熱 檸蜜).
I’m totally in love with their scrambled eggs, which is always satisfying. The scrambled eggs served was fluffy, creamy, and silky – the prefect texture and taste! It’s actually quite an art to whip up a prefect scrambled eggs given the variables needed: low heat, butter, milk (maybe), eggs, and seasoning. Australia Dairy Company definitely serves my favourite scrambled eggs!
The Hong Kong-style French toast is unique, and I couldn’t find a good replication of such toast outside of Hong Kong. Australia Dairy Company did a decent job in coating the toast with a thin crispy savoury egg crust, definitely one of the top French toasts I had in Hong Kong.
Honey lemon is a typical Hong Kong beverage, which can easily find in any cha chaan teng. It’s just honey and lemon yet it tasted so good. The taste is pretty similar across different cha chaan tengs, hence I suspect a pre-mixed syrup might have been used. Depending on the weather when I visited, I’ll order either cold honey lemon or hot honey lemon.
Thankfully, I’m having this either annually or biennially, otherwise I might be getting diabetes.
While I was sorting out my recent photos, I noticed the price differences between now and 2009. Out of curiosity, I wondered how the prices increased over the years. Thanks to its fame, I managed to find the prices list easily as there’re ample photos around.
For simplicity’s sake, I’m only doing a comparison between the set meals. There are 3 set meals: Breakfast, Tea-Break and Quick-Meal. The Breakfast set and Quick-Meal set are the same price.
Source: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.
For Breakfast set and Quick-Meal Set, the price increased from HK 24 to HK 36, which translated to 50% increment in 10 years. For Tea-Break set, the price increased from HK 28 to HK 43, which translated to approximate 53% increment in 10 years. The cost of living is affecting all walks of life.
Regardless, these set meals are more worthy compared to a-la-carte.
- Breakfast (早餐), HKD 36; available from 7am to 12pm
White Toast (牛油方飽), HKD 11; Scrambled/Fried Eggs (西煎雙蛋), HKD 20; Ham Macaroni Soup (火腿通粉), HKD 28; and Coffee/Tea (咖啡或茶), HKD 20. Top-up HKD 2 for cold beverages. - Tea-Break (茶餐), HKD 43; available from 12pm to 11pm
White Toast (牛油方飽), HKD 11; Scrambled/Fried Eggs with Ham (火腿煎雙蛋), HKD 40;
Barbecued Pork Spaghetti Soup (叉燒湯意粉), HKD 28; and Coffee/Tea (咖啡或茶), HKD 20. Top-up HKD 2 for cold beverages. - Quick-Meal (快餐), HKD 36; available from all day
White Toast (牛油方飽), HKD 11; Scrambled/Fried Eggs (西煎雙蛋), HKD 20; Hot/Cold Milk (冷熱鮮奶), HKD 20. Top-up HKD 2 for other cold beverages.
Despite the savings, I normally order a-la-carte as the set meals doesn’t consists French Toast (HKD 22) and I’m not too sure if it can be upgraded to honey lemon (HKD 22 for hot / HKD 26 for cold), since it’s more costly than the average beverage.
To conclude, Australia Dairy Company is a must-go if you’re in for some awesome scrambled eggs!
