Getting to Tai O
Tai O is an Outlying island, where houses on stilts can be sighted. One can escape from the dazzling Kowloon to this quaint picturesque island. If you like to explore more of Hong Kong and enjoy a stroll, spend half a day in Tai O. There are few options to visit Tai O.
Option 1. MTR -> Taxi/Walk -> Ferry

- Take MTR and alight @ Tung Chung Station

- Take the Ferry to Tai O, payment can be made via Octopus Card or by cash. (HK 25, 30mins)
Option 2. MTR -> Cable Car -> Bus

If you are a group of 3 or more, you may can consider Option 1 (ferry) to Tai O, as the taxi fare to ferry pier is more cost effective. Just a reminder, have your meal before going to the ferry pier as there isn’t much option available for breakfast.
You may consider Option 2 (cable car) as a return trip, since the queue from Ngong Ping back to Tung Chung normally have less crowd. You can visit Big Buddha and Wisdom Path, to complete your day trip, as touring Tai O usually takes half-day.
FYI, there is another option to Tai O, via Mui Wo. But I didn’t do thorough research on this route, as I am not keen on Mui Wo. If my understanding is right, you can take a ferry from Central to Mui Wo, then hop on a bus to Tai O.
