妖怪村 @ 溪頭 | Monster Village @ Xitou

Monster Village is a theme park based on a legendary story, about the friendship of two individuals and a dying wish. The Monster Village, as the name implied, have lots of little monsters around; some monsters attempted to be scary while some monsters were just cuteness overload.

There were merchandises / products sighted, specially designed for this Monster Village, labelled with pun intended wordings. These specialty shops might be a good place to buy some souvenirs.

The journey to Monster Village takes approximate 1.5 hours, a total of 3 hours for round trip; you might consider staying a night at the hotel just next to Monster Village, the hotel is under the same management for Monster Village.

How to get there
From Taichung, you can take Bus 6883, journey estimated to be 1.5 hours. It stops by TaiChung Rail Station (台中火車站) as well as TaiChung HSR (高鐵台中站).

From Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), you can take Bus 6801, journey estimated to be 1.5 hours. FYI, _Shuishe mentioned in the bus schedule is the bus stop located at Sun Moon Lake.

This is a relatively small theme park, I’m able to complete touring it under an hour. I ended up loitering at Xitou Nature Education Area, while waiting for the last bus (due to low frequency). I found a row of small eatery shops, which most closed. Thankfully, I stumbled upon some locals playing animal cards and joined them to kill time.

Considering the journey and time, I will not recommend visiting Monster Village as it’s a waste of time. Aside from the monsters, there wasn’t any appeal. There wasn’t any rides, or games; possible interactions were minimal. Nonetheless, I would considered myself lucky, as I manage to witness a regular show performed by a giant monster (scheduled timing was not published); I couldn’t really appreciate this performance.

The Monsters theme wasn’t holistic, as the food sold were plainly labelled with interesting name but they’re pretty much normal food. I was expecting some customized food, e.g. food carved into the shape of a monster , or a monster character choco-powder dusted on your beverages.

If you’re keen on visiting Monster Village (as there were people that enjoyed it), consider Xitou Nature Education Area as well. Xitou Nature Education Area is just next to Monster Village, and I believed it will be a more time-worthy visit. Sadly, I did not have a chance to explore the nature area as I reached Xitou relatively late and left with less than an hour, thus I am reluctant to spend for entrance. The scenery was amazing from outside and I trust they offer more if you can explore it.

P.S. I heard from the locals, the sweet potato or some potato alike products sold at Xitou is yummying! These products are normally sold by vendors carrying small basket.
